The 1940s influenced look in action

1940s and 1950s lust (includes free pattern links!)
Why do I always feel like going vintage in summer? Top centre in the pictures below is my hair inspiration right now. My favourite cousin just came over and helped me use my ghd to curl my hair back in front (wrap it as tightly around the ghd as it will go) and twist it around my finger as it dries to tame and settle the curls. Then SPRAY to hold and slick the sides back with a slightly wet look.

The makeup of this era really appeals to me. I tend towards a matt look because shine makes me look tired, and I use paler face powder than my natural skin tone. It’s actually pretty hard to find ‘translucent’ powder that doesn’t make dark skin look a bit pale.
I love love rouge (which looks awesome on dark skin), and am currently addicted to Mac’s ‘Absolutely it’ lipliner which works as a ‘glorified natural look’. Click the image below for a better description of makeup from this period.
And finally, the jeans that inspired it all: I picked up a pair of these amazing high waisted cherry jeans by Stop Staring at Beyond the Trapdoor. I don’t know why I didn’t go high waisted before!! Perfect to lengthen a short ass like me.

Ah the 80s.
I’ve been moving away from classic alt or goth looks to a fusion style that incorporates contemporary trends without losing good old alternative fashion drama. Pretty happy with the results.
I’ve been moving away from the multicoloured hair because I miss wearing white. (I get colour run :/) Going lighter with my skin tone is giving me more drama than expected, particularly in this red tone.
After laser surgery and I can’t wear eye makeup for a month. I decided to make my hair lighter in anticipation of this. With naturally black brows and eyelashes, going lighter instantly gives me the bolder brows that are in vogue right now. I used pale pink frosted lipstick to emphasise the look.

Bye bye glasses: an ode to sexy bespectacled ladies
I’m writing this at my parents house while recovering from laser surgery on my eyes. Not being able to see is incredibly boring and I should probably not be on the computer at all. I’m justifying it by saying that I’ve managed to sleep a lot over the past few days and I’m keeping computer work to a minimum.
I’ve had glasses since I was about um… this age.
Not pretty huh. Heehee, I had an overbite, giant hair, and a little later a moustache. My glasses were huge and white framed and like most of my clothes, far too big for me. I think given that I was obviously a total, total nerd, that my glasses have always had a negative association for me despite liking them on other people.
So here are some hot pictures of bespectacled ladies for those of you who have glasses, and a farewell to my bespectacled life.

Season change: fashion overload and Perth right now.
The polyvore I posted yesterday sums up how I feel with every seasonal shift. I make the terrible mistake of going shopping in the main strips in the city (our equivalent to high street fashion) and reading fashion magazines. Then I just spend the next two weeks in utter confusion hiding in my room trying to figure out my look for the season. Okay yes I have problems. And then I remembered to ignore magazine fashion and look at the street.
Forget cutouts, statements sleeves, 60s jewellery, colour blocking, lace, sheer flowing fabrics… BLAH. The overarching aesthetic on the street in Perth at the moment is vintage with a strong hipster influence. What I’m seeing is: blue denim, long unstraightened hair, plaits or braids, red lipstick, geek glasses, a 90s influence, cheques, velour, vintage floral dresses, flat shoes, ugly-but-cute, unsexy but cool, grungey and slightly unkept.
And after fighting my initial gothic and burlesque influenced confusion of ‘But… but where is the sex?’ I’ve found that I really like it. I think it’s indicative of a very Gen Y rejection of contemporary fashion and an underlying craving for authenticity and meaning. Is it contrived? Possibly. Probably. But individual efforts are irrelevant to fashion as a reflection of the zeitgeist. Basically, I like what it says more than the former ultra straight hair Posh Spice plastic aspiration to perfection.
I also dig that it’s reflective of the cultural renaissance happening in the city right now. There are new small bars cropping up weekly, street festivals becoming more popular than ever before and Perth’s creative element spreading its wings. The recent fashion festival was a great example of that with mainstream media pulling the festival out of the arts section and consistently onto the front pages.
It’s an exciting time to be a Perthite and an exciting time to be interested in fashion in this city.
